Amesbury

The Amesbury & Military Camp Light Railway, was authorised for construction on September 28th 1898. The railway was to run from a junction west of Grateley Station, on the main LSWR Basingstoke to Salisbury line, via Newton Tony and Amesbury to a terminus at Shrewton. Unfortunately the section between Amesbury and Shrewton was never built, the official opening to the Amesbury terminus being June 2nd 1902.

However, this arrangement was short lived as the Amesbury & Military Camp Light Railway (Bulford Extension), was opened on June 1st 1906, to Bulford Station, Bulford Camp Station, used for military personnel only, then finally ending in an army compound at Sling, this being used for goods traffic only.

The 'Bulford Branch Line', as it became known, lost its passenger service in 1952, but troop trains and the goods service, mainly to the N.A.F.F.I depot at Amesbury survived until final closure on March 4th 1963.

Amesbury therefore is a very much, "what might have been", model. The time span is post 1980's Salisbury re-signalling. The Signalling and control of the layout is based on BR's eNtrance I eXit (NX) system, the same as Salisbury's' existing signal box.

All the running lines are track circuited. Using state of the art, solid-state technology, pressing just two buttons will check the route is clear, change the points, give the correct signal aspect, and make sure a controller is available to work the train.

A layout such as this does take time to build and develop; however, we'll endeavour to answer your many questions....
